American Farrier's Association AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF) Examination

Open to all who have successfully completed
the AFA Certified Farrier Examination.

CERTIFIED JOURNEYMAN Written Examination:
Open to all who have successfully completed the AFA Certified Farrier Examination.

Consists of multiple choice and true / false questions.
Time Limit: Two (2) hours.
Passing: ' 80% or more correct.

CERTIFIED JOURNEYMAN Practical Examination:
Part I - Shoeing
Consists of shoeing four (4) feet with handmade shoes using the appropriate bar stock and nails. The front shoes are to be toe-clipped and the hind shoes quarter clipped.

Shoeing will be scored on the current AFA score sheets. Shoeing shall be examined and scored in three (3) parts:

  1. Hoof preparation
  2. Shoe preparation and fit
  3. Nailing, clinching and fmishing

Time Limit-Two (2) hours, to begin after the old shoes are removed.

  • No extra time allowed for pads, caulks, etc. The examinee may refuse a horse requiring pads, caulks, etc.

Passing score- 70% or higher.

Part II - Bar Shoe
Consists of a forged, fITe-welded, fullered, straight bar shoe from appropriate bar stock. The shoe shall be forged to fit a pattern or foot provided by the AF A Approved Examiner.

Time Limit -thirty-five (35) minutes.

The weld will be judged yes/no with a passing weld being required to proceed with the scoring. A passing weld is one judged good enough to hold up under nor- mal use. A shoe with a passing weld will be judged from the current Guidelines For Evaluating Farrier Competitions and Certifications for shoe quality and fit.

Passing score - 70% or higher.
