CERTIFIED Written Examination:
Consists of multiple choice and true/false questions.
Time Limit: One (1) hour.
Passing: 80% or more correct.
CERTIFIED Practical Examination:
Part I - Shoeing
Consists of shoeing two (2) feet, either a front pair or a hind pair.
Use of a forge is optional.
Shoeing will be scored on the current AF A score sheets. Shoeing shall
be examined and scored in three (3) parts:
- Hoof preparation
- Shoe preparation and fit
- Nailing, clinching, and finishing
Time limit - One (1) hour, to begin after the old shoes are removed.
Passing score - 70% or higher
Part II - Shoe Display
- Candidate shall bring completed shoes to the test site with the following
modifications (more than one modification may be contained on each shoe,
all front or hind shoes should be made for the same front or hind foot):
- clips - at least one toe clip and a pair of side clips
- square toe
- rolled toe
- rocker toe
- hind shoe with extended heels
- straight bar shoe
- shoe to raise the hoof angle
- shoe with pad finished as if on foot
- two types of traction devices
- trailer
- punched nail hole (mandatory after September I, 1994)
- All modifications shall have been manufactured by the candidate.
- The candidate will answer questions concerning the modifications.
- The candidate will be asked to demonstrate at the test site one modification
and fit it to a pattern or foot.
