Cultural Exchange Program
In 1981, Edward Martin, FWCF ventured from Closeburn, Scotland to Albuquerque, NM for the AFA convention. It was an eye-opening experience to say the least, but more importantly, one in which a new vision was born. Realizing the great benefit of the free and prolific exchange of information, knowledge, and skills, Edward proposed the Apprentice Exchange Scheme (now the Cultural Exchange Program).
It became a reality in 1982 and has continued uninterrupted for 21 years, involving nearly 100 British and American Farriers. It has benefited countless others who have been host, friend, family or contemporary of those participants.
In its current form, the Cultural Exchange Program involves a three-month exchange between the American Farrier’s Association and various host countries. The AFA selects two members to participate in the exchange each year, providing them with transportation to the host country.
There is also a program for farriers unable to commit to the 3 month program. Farriers wishing to participate may apply for a 1 to 3 week program in the UK. This is a shared responsibility program. The AFA will set up the exchange but the participant will be responsible for their own travel expenses.
Once there, participants are provided with room, board, hospitality, and education by farrier representatives of the host country. Participants study the farriery trade under the direction of various hosts, usually staying with a host representative for 7 to 14 days.
Individual Application & Participation
To participate in the Cultural Exchange Program, applicants must obtain an application from the AFA office. Along with the completed application, applicants must submit at least two letters of reference from AFA CJF’s. Additional letters and references are recommended. Applications are due by Jan 1st of the year you intend to participate. Applications for the short exchange program must be submitted 6 months prior to the desired time for the exchange.
Each applicant must also attend the AFA Convention for a personal interview with representatives of the Cultural Exchange Committee. It is recommended that all candidates have their passports prior to the AFA convention and have made arrangements to be available for a three-month period. While the exact dates for the exchange vary each year, the exchange usually occurs from June through September.
At convention, the committee selects two individuals to participate in the program. First and second alternates are also selected should anyone be unable to participate at the time of the exchange. Those selected as participants are announced at the General Membership Meeting.
Chapter Participation
Since this is an exchange, the AFA also acts as a host country. AFA chapters volunteer to act as host associates. These associations arrange for their members to serve as hosts for the participants on a weekly rotation. Chapters also designate an individual “sponsor” who serves as a contact person for the participants. Chapters interested in participating should contact the Cultural Exchange Committee Chairman.
